Why Secondary Glazing?
- Buildings account for 44% of the UK's total carbon emissions
- Single glazing in buildings is a major factor in heat loss
- Efficient secondary glazing can improve the thermal performance of a window by more than 60%
- The debate on carbon emissions has intensified and most scientists agree that we have to reduce emissions to limit the effects of global warming
StandardsApproved document L of the Building Regulations sets strict standards of energy efficiency for new buildings and those undergoing major reconstruction or change of use. But owners of existing buildings are not currently obliged to make improvements. They will, however, be required to produce an energy performance certificate under the European Union's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. This will define the building's Energy Rating using a concept already successfully applied to fridges and freezers.
The long term value of buildings is likely to be affected by the rating and so steps need to be taken to improve performance.
Why consider Secondary Glazing?
- Significantly improves the thermal performance of existing windows
- Can meet the requirements of Part L
- Does not change the character of the facade and so is ideal for listed buildings or those in conservation areas
- Can be fitted swiftly with minimal disturbance to occupants
- Can be fitted in phases to suit budgets
- Minimal maintenance needs
