From primary and secondary schools through to colleges, universities and centres for adult education there is a consistent requirement for quiet and comfortable conditions that aid study and communication.

Many schools and colleges occupy traditional buildings in busy locations which can impact on the learning environment.

Selectaglaze secondary glazing systems provide significant noise and thermal insulation and are also able to meet the needs of enhanced security.

Highly effective noise insulation

Low ambient noise levels in classrooms will:

  • Limit distractions
  • Improve concentration
  • Increase intelligibility
  • Reduce voice strain

The upper limit for ambient noise levels in classrooms, regulated through BB93 - Acoustic design of schools, is 35dB and this reduces to 30dB for music and drama performance rooms. External noise levels can be up to 70 - 80dB from sources such as traffic, playgrounds or even internal performance studios. Selectaglaze secondary glazing fitted with standard glass can substantially reduce noise levels by 42 - 45dB and even higher levels if thicker glass is introduced.

Significantly improved comfort levels

Classrooms with traditional single glazed windows can be uncomfortable in winter months. Better insulation will:

  • Improve comfort and therefore concentration levels
  • Minimise draughts
  • Lower energy costs
  • Reduce carbon footprint

A secondary window provides draught sealing over the whole of the primary window and introduces a second pane of glass that traps an insulation layer of air. Selectaglaze secondary glazing includes two efficient draught seals and wiht a low emissivity glass reduce heat loss can be redcued by up to 65%.

Enhanced security

Educational buildings are often targets of theft, vandalism and sometimes arson. More secure windows can:

  • Protect valuable equipment
  • Safeguard staff in reception areas
  • Preserve clean environments
  • Secure laboratory windows

Selectaglaze offers products accredited to Secured by Design and are a Police Preferred Specification.High level security products are available to meet Governmnet standards for windows and viewing screens in Laboratories. These are tested to Loss Prevention Certification Board(LPCB) standards and appear in the Red Book.

Designed for a purpose

Selectaglaze secondary glazing designs are used extensively within Schools, Colleges and Universities in locations including:

  • Classrooms
  • Lecture Halls
  • Libraries
  • Student Accommodation
  • Performance Studios
  • Control Windows
  • SecureReceptionWindows
  • Clean Room Environments
  • Secure Laboratories

minimising disruption

Secondary windows are purpose made and arrive fully factory glazed. Installation can be completed quickly and efficiently with minimum disruption but where work could impact on staff or students it can be programmed to coincide with holiday periods.
