Buildings used in Healthcare need to provide clean, controlled environments that also provide comfort and security. In addition the Health Estate has to consider its commitment to Carbon reduction and the increasingly high cost of energy.
Selectaglaze secondary glazing can offer benefits to both existing and new buildings in a wide variety of locations.
Controlled Environments
The high performance seals in secondary glazing can control the ingress of airborne dust and dirt and help maintain the room pressure (positive or negative) that is needed to limit the spread of infection. Secondary glazing can also incorporate switchable glass or remotely operated blinds to provide privacy when needed. Applications will include critical care units and laboratories.
Peace and Quiet
Many hospitals are in noisy locations which will impact on the sleep and rest that can be so important to the healing process. Selectaglaze secondary glazing systems fitted with standard glass are capable of reducing noise by 42-45dB and even higher levels if thicker glass is introduced.
Security
In certain situations, such as clinics, pharmacies or laboratories, where sensitive or dangerous materials are used or stored, high levels of security are required. Selectaglaze offers systems accredited to “Secured by Design” and tested by The Loss Prevention Certification Board to meet Home Office requirements. Products are listed in the Red Book.
Secure mental health units are required to confine and protect patients. Bespoke secondary windows with robust frames can incorporate secure laminated glass or polycarbonate panels and anti-ligature furniture. The installation will allow the safe installation of privacy blinds between the windows and permit the primary glazing to be specified from standard window sections in a ‘new build’ or simply retained and overhauled in a refurbishment.
Energy Efficiency
Of the energy used in Service buildings nearly half is applied to space heating. Many buildings are of traditional construction with poor insulation standards and will need to consider energy efficiency measures to lower carbon footprints and reduce energy costs. Selectaglaze secondary window systems glazed with low emissivity glass will reduce u-values across the window to less than 1.9, a reduction of up to 65% against a single glazed metal window.
Minimising disruption
Secondary windows are purpose made and arrive fully factory glazed. Installation can be completed quickly and efficiently with minimum disruption but where the works could impact on staff and patients, installation can be phased to suit periods when the facilities are unoccupied or programmed in with a general refurbishment.
