This treatment formed part of the transformation of a central London townhouse into a quiet and clean private clinic. The primary windows at first glance appear to be the original Victorian sashes. However; they are actually new handcrafted heritage timber double glazed hinged casements. Great care and investment had been made to improve the performance of the primary windows, yet they still didn’t quite meet the requirements of the new private clinic.

Prior to the installation, the clinic was subject to intrusive noise ingress from the busy street outside which interfered with the desire to create a calm and quiet atmosphere. The primary windows effectively reduced draughts but were not adequate for the demands of the newly installed air infiltration system, which required high levels of air tightness. In addition it was felt patient privacy needed to be increased, as the clinic is overlooked by other commercial and residential buildings, as well as having passengers on double decker buses passing directly by its windows.
The new owners wanted the refurbished clinic to be quiet, preserve the patient privacy and provide plenty of clean warm air and natural light, to help the recovery process of those staying. Any additional treatments to the primary windows needed to be sympathetic to retain their aesthetic qualities.
To address these issues, a secondary glazing solution was reached using casement style units, as they add no additional sightlines and retain full functionality of the primary windows. Thirty Series 41 casements were glazed with a 28mm sealed unit, with interstitial blinds within. The Series 41 casement has a flush glass to frame feature which minimises the build-up of dust on ledges. In addition, the interstitial blinds provide the rooms with privacy, whilst allowing natural light to pass through the glazing. They come with discreet controls allowing the amount of light to enter the room to be easily managed, maximising the comfort of the patients. With the blinds contained within the sealed unit, they are also kept dust and therefore maintenance free.
The cavity created between the primary and secondary glazing, significantly added to the reduction in the noise ingress from the busy thoroughfare outside. Airtight seals ensured that draughts were eliminated, allowing the new air infiltration system to work at full capacity. As a result, the rooms’ temperature can be controlled by the staff, maintaining a steady ambient environment conducive to recuperation.
With the integration of the Series 41 casements and interstitial blinds, the clinic is now quiet, fresh, clean, private and light. The secondary glazing looks stylish and modern, whilst blending seamlessly into the Victorian style primary windows.
