A serious squeeze for the Series 80 – getting round space restrictions on installations

Health and safety of our installers is paramount, so when site visits are carried out by either Technical Advisors or Surveyors, all hazards and possible issues are noted. In a recent project undertaken, a large Series 80 triple horizontal sliding unit (h) 2352mm x (w) 2829mm, weighing 123.38kg was to be installed in a 1st floor apartment with a fairly narrow staircase and very little room to manoeuvre the units into the flat and then into the living room. It could be compared to fitting a triangular block in a circular hole, an impossibility – so how did the installers get round this? A large primary window with 3 sliding box sash windows, which required Selectaglaze secondary glazing for thermal improvements The window in question – pre installation A large opening comprised of three vertical sliding box sash windows with single glazing, were proving some discomfort for the occupant due to the draughts and heat loss it caused. Located in a conservation area, the original windows could not be changed, so obvious upgrades were to be provided by installing secondary glazing.  After initial assessment and discussions, it was decided that the neatest treatment for this opening, would be the three panel Series 80 horizontal slider glazed with 6mm toughened glass, which would be robust enough to operate well at the dimensions required. There was some initial concern over the profile sizes, however as you will see in the final installation picture – in an opening this big, it fits perfectly and looks discrete and comparably thin. The blinds sited above the three primary windows were to be rehung post secondary glazing installation. To facilitate this, a pre-finished enlarged timber head detail was created, providing a fixing point for them to be re-fitted. The secondary glazing timber sub-frames which are provided on jobs arrive in four parts, all factory finished to match and fit unobtrusively within the opening. Apart from the weight of the piece to form the head, the sheer length of it proved difficult to manoeuvre, but after some too-ing and fro-ing, it was in. The timber grounds were fixed in place and then it was time to start fitting the aluminium frame. Fixing of the timber sub frames in a window opening to allow the installation of a secondary glazed unit Fixing of the timber sub-frames to the opening Generally, our units arrived fully made-up to site, to enable a speedy installation to cause as little disruption as possible. This time, however, the frame was delivered broken down to be assembled inside the property. It meant a number of trips up and down the stairs for the installers – they must have reached their step count for the day! The series 80 secondary glazed frame being assembled in the flat prior to fixing onto the timber sub frame. Assembly of the Series 80 3-pane horizontal sliding aluminium frame for installation The frame was fixed to the timber and the sashes placed within, running tracks checked and the unit was done – all was installed and ready for the blinds to refitted at a later date. The final installation of the Series 80 3 pane horizontal sliding secondary glazing Site visits are always highly recommended, not only to get a feel for the best secondary glazing treatment but also to assess accessibility to make sure the units can be delivered and reach the desired space where they are to be installed. Precautions and ‘plans of action’ can then be taken, such as in this case, to have units delivered in a form that makes the job not only easier for the installing team but possible! It's all about attention to detail.
