The Comet Hotel flying high again

Built in the shape of a DH Comet Racer, the Comet Hotel is totally unique. Opened as the Comet Hotel in 1936 this iconic building has recently received a much-needed renovation and retrofit. One of the major aims of the project was to improve the acoustic properties of the building. Located at the intersection of two major roads, the original single glazed crittall windows provided little to no acoustic barrier against an ever-increasing cacophony of traffic noise.  Integral to the Art Deco design, the windows could not simply be replaced and so another solution needed to be found. Comet model - Acoustic nuisance The Comet Hotel modelled on DH Comet Racer – busy traffic Key to the comets design are the three curved bays. The biggest of these is on the front elevation and forms the nose of the comet. This is flanked on either side by smaller side bays which form the wingtips of the aeroplane. The Crittall windows with their linear lines accentuate the curves and modernity of the overall design; making it look very much like its comet namesake. Ground plan shaped like a comet Comet hotel – shaped like a plane – Crittall windows – Integral to design Having received Grade II Listed status in 1981, any material changes to the building first required consent from its allocated conservation officer. To protect the building’s unique design and restore its original ambience; an acoustic secondary glazing treatment combined with a replica crittall window solution was agreed between the Conservation Officer and owner. For the nose of the comet, the first-floor central bay was treated with five Series 20 vertical sliding faceted units; flanked by two bays containing four vertical sliding units. Glazed with 6mm toughened glass. Each unit installed 100mm away from the primary. This sound deadening gap, coupled with our acoustically sealed, optimally fitted units guarantees a minimum 43 Rw dB reduction in noise ingress. Whilst on the ground floor the wingtips of the comet will be similarly treated to ensure the restaurant areas are peaceful and relaxing. Creativity, attention to detail and bespoke top of the range secondary glazing units have all been combined to bring 30s glamour back to the Comet Hotel.
