In partnership with our trusted suppliers, Hydro UK, we are on a mission to use only the most sustainable aluminium in our products and to showcase the true value of this invaluable metal.
It’s vital that we all cut our carbon emissions, as the UK aims to reach net zero by 2050. According to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, the aluminium industry currently contributes to 1.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Gt CO2e). It needs to reduce its GHG emissions to one-twentieth of its current emissions. We are proud to be working with a leading aluminium and renewable energy company that builds businesses and partnerships for a more sustainable future. The overall recycled content of our products has improved to 43% because of the improved recycled content of aluminium. And we are looking to reduce the carbon content further. We have achieved a reduced carbon aluminium of 6kg CO2e per 1 Kg aluminium compared to 16.7 Kg CO2e per 1 Kg aluminium global average.
It’s a fact that sustainably sourced aluminium can help cut carbon emissions. So why are there so many myths and misconceptions about this valuable metal? Let’s take a look… _____Myth 1: Aluminium is structurally weak, so windows aren’t secure
Fact: It may be a fraction of the weight of other metals, but it actually has the most robust structural integrity. In fact, aluminium is used in large-scale construction projects such as bridges and buildings due to its strength. Thanks to its impact-resistant properties, aluminium can carry heavy loads – which makes it ideal for your door and window frames. It’s also resistant to warping and twisting. Add excellent multi-point locking systems and toughened glass, and you’ve got superb all-round security.
Myth 2: Aluminium is bad for the environment
Fact: 100% recyclable aluminium is an incredibly environmentally friendly metal. It has one of the highest recycling rates among all materials – more than 70% of aluminium produced is recycled and 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.
Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy required to produce the primary metal.
_____Myth 3: Aluminium is difficult to source
Fact: Roughly 8% of the earth’s crust consist of aluminium – making it the single most abundant metal. Of course, aluminium doesn’t occur naturally – it’s found in nearly 300 different minerals that are mined and then processed into aluminium.
Myth 4: Aluminium products are too expensive
Fact: OK, it may cost more at first compared to some other materials. However, aluminium provides significant long-term value due to its durability, minimal maintenance requirements and energy efficiency. So over time, it’s no more costly than other materials – and may even save you money.
Myth 5: Aluminium poses a health hazard
Fact: The U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) specifically says that aluminium in saucepans, pots and other common products is safe. And if you’re going to cook food with it, you can certainly use it in your window frames! _____Myth 6: Aluminium will corrode, rust or fade over time
Fact: All metals and alloys can corrode, but for some reason, there’s a common misconception that aluminium corrodes quickly. In fact, aluminium forms a protective oxide layer naturally, making it highly resistant to weather conditions and corrosion. This quality contributes to its impressive longevity, even in challenging environments. As for rusting, this only occurs in iron or its alloys like steel. Aluminium cannot rust. And fading? Good finishing techniques make all the difference. Powder coating and anodizing make aluminium finishes exceptionally durable, so that your frames can withstand harsh weather conditions without fading, cracking, or peeling.
Myth 7: Aluminium windows are difficult to maintain
Fact: Aluminium has almost zero maintenance needs. It’s termite-resistant and weather-resistant, plus it doesn’t rot, peel or flake. Perfect for window frames. _____Myth 8: Aluminium only comes in one finish
Fact: In the past, aluminium was only available in white or silver colour with hardwood finish. Today, you have all sorts of colour options, along with the choice of glossy and matte. At Selectaglaze, we offer a range of options, including powder paint, wood grain or anodised finish.
Myth 9: Aluminium doesn't provide good thermal or acoustic insulation
A well-designed aluminium window or door with a thermal break and high-quality glazing can limit heat loss in the winter and reduce heat gain in the summer, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor climate year-round. And acoustic insulation? It's a common belief that aluminium windows and doors let in more noise due to the metal's conductivity. However, with proper installation and insulation - not forgetting the role of double or even triple glazing - aluminium products can effectively keep out noise. Together with our suppliers, Hydro UK, we make sure only the best quality, most sustainably sourced aluminium makes its way into our frames. And that’s a fact.- Date
