The Journey of a Hinge - a Net Zero Story

At Selectaglaze, we are passionate about minimising our environmental impact. Since 2012, we've been actively measuring our carbon footprint, not just for ourselves but for our customers as well. As industry leaders, it is important for us to assess our operations and lead the way in sustainability. That is why we are excited to share an example of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. Recently, we traced the journey of a single hinge through our supply chain, and the findings were eye-opening.

On average, a pair of hinges would cover at least 500 miles before reaching assembly.

Our Head of Production meticulously mapped this journey. The route included stops from the hinge manufacturer to our factory, then to the machining specialist, back to us, and finally to the powder coating facility. With careful consideration, precise calculations and research into alternative options, we made the decision to relocate machining and powder coating to a more local supplier. After redirecting deliveries from the manufacturer, a hinge now only travels 88 miles. This small change has led to big results:
  • Significant carbon footprint reduction
  • Fewer purchase orders—from 6 down to 2
  • Improved efficiencies in our operations and finance
  • More sustainable products for our customers
It’s a powerful reminder that even the smallest components can drive meaningful change. By rethinking the journey of a hinge, we’ve taken a step toward a more sustainable future—for us, for our customers, and for the planet.
