Sloane Street is well known for its vibrant cafes and luxury designer shops and has long been considered a prime London location. 64 Sloane Street was once home to Jane Austen and is where she wrote ‘Sense and Sensibility’. As part of an office refurbishment process Selectaglaze was approached by Cadogan Estates to design a secondary glazing solution for this exquisite six storey building along with its neighbouring number 65.
Originally designed by Fairfax Wade, the buildings boast a beautiful range of shapes from curved bays to circular windows. Windows are integral to the design and add a flow and grace to the exterior. These openings also allow an abundance of light into the interior as well as affording the occupants beautiful views of the square.

The property is separated from the peaceful Sloane Square by Sloane Street. This would have been a perfectly peaceful arrangement in the 1800s and Jane would only have been faintly aware of the sound of horses and carts whilst penning her prose. However, during the twentieth and twenty first century this thoroughfare has morphed into the noisy highway it is today, complete with its own bus lane.
Selectaglaze has successfully worked with the Cadogan Estate for many years and is highly experienced in resolving noise ingress through primary windows. Each individual window required its own specification. A total of 95 windows were treated across the two buildings using either hinged or sliding systems. All units were glazed with toughened and low emissivity glass. All frames are bespoke manufactured to fit their individual openings together with their timber grounds, to ensure the closest fit and optimum sealing.
When secondary units are installed with a cavity of at least 100mm, it provides an air gap between the two panes of glass which dramatically reduces noise transmission.
Care was taken from the outset to ensure that all original sightlines where kept and that all units were designed to be sympathetic to the original interior. The resulting refurbishment has achieved its objective of a creating a warm, quiet working space whilst retaining the original charm and style of this Grade II Listed building.
